Ayoung British company, Wingback, has teamed up with select illustrators and artists from all around the world to produce a machined and personalized mechanical pen. In addition to the regular mechanical pens, these special editions will be available for a limited time here.
Harnessing the potential of a 360 degree canvas around the barrel of the mechanical pen, illustrator Lei Melendres has created a detailed looping artwork named “We Are Infinite”. Lei describes his “Infinity Mix” doodle style as conveying the intensity of endless details and elements interacting together to form a scene of art.
The best part about the Wingback mechanical pen is that it takes a stand against the disposable culture of fast fashion, to design products that will change the way consumers – and manufacturers – behave; by creating cherished items that will last a lifetime.
The brand’s latest creation, the Wingback mechanical pen, epitomizes the brand’s “buy once” philosophy. Machine turned from brass or stainless steel, it has been designed to last for decades, not months and help its owner rediscover the joy of putting pen to paper.
With a wide 10mm (3/8 Inch) diameter and knurled grip, it sits comfortably in the hand to reduce writing fatigue while the satisfying weight of its materials encourages more time to be taken with every pen stroke.
Personalization of 50 characters available, laser engraved onto the barrel. A single handed twist allows you to lock the nib in place with the bespoke mechanism. Thanks to precise manufacturing tolerances any unwanted nib wobble is prevented. The pen is fitted with a Fisher PR4 pressurized refill. The PR4 refill is a pressurized cartridge with a tungsten carbide tip. It lasts three times longer than alternatives and provides an unparalleled smoothness with every pen stroke. (Refills widely available from Amazon and other stores)
The company can laser engrave up to 50 characters on the barrel to your specification, enough space for your initials, name or a personal quote to make your pen a little bit extra special. Over 25 iterations have honed in on this design. A larger diameter barrel means your hand won’t fatigue as quickly as gripping a narrower pen and the knurled barrel provides good purchase for your fingers. The satisfying weight of the pen also acts as a gentle reminder to take more time over your writing and drawing, achieving a neater result.
The heavier of the two, the brass pen will develop a unique patina as its surface oxidizes and interacts with the natural oils in your hands. This pen will quickly look like a timeless tool, but can easily be polished up to its original luster. Slightly lighter than brass, stainless steel has a harder surface and will not oxidize over time. This means it will maintain its crisp aesthetic indefinitely.
The metal designs are custom made from start to finish from a solid block of stainless steel or brass and CNC machined to produce incredibly precise parts which are a pleasure to use. Each one is individually inspected and tested to ensure it will withstand the test of time. The pen is designed to be as compact as possible to fit discreetly into a bag or pocket, but long enough to sit comfortably in the crook of your hand while writing. The wide diameter makes it comfortable to use for long periods and strong enough to last a lifetime.
Wingback is an independent design studio founded in 2014 and based in the heart of London. They stand for an alternative to mass production and disposable culture. Everything they make is designed to be a pleasure to use, to improve with age and become a cherished item that can be passed down through generations.
